Volunteer Areas

Land Management: Ranger volunteers assist with trail maintenance at both Fontenelle Forest and Neale Woods Nature Centers. They also help with restoration of prairies and oak savannas, and with maintaining our teaching gardens. The Land Stewards group meets one Saturday morning every month to work on special projects. You can also be involved with weekly, monthly or seasonal projects.

Special Events: Our public education events require many hands to be successful! Generally, we need volunteers to help with greeting the public, selling memberships, helping with children's crafts and games and giving guided nature walks. Special events are generally on weekend days.

Bluebird Trail Monitor: Weekly monitoring of bluebird nesting boxes at Fontenelle Forest and Neale Woods Nature Centers. Training is required. Spring and summer only.

Building Maintenance: Assist the staff in maintaining the interior and exterior of our buildings. This includes painting, reproofing, deck maintenance, exhibit design and construction.

Animal Care: Weekly help with the care and feeding of our education animals (reptiles, amphibians, mammals and raptors). Training is required. Volunteers must give a consistent set day and time.

Teacher-Naturalists: Education Volunteers assist us everyday. They help with pre-K and school programs as well as with the drop-in visitors and prescheduled group hikes. A science background is helpful, but not required.

Training includes handling our resident critters, leading guided walks, using our nature discovery kits and on-going training about the natural world.

Astronomy: Astronomy volunteers assist with public viewing of the night sky. This can include using telescopes, telling stories and assisting visitors. Training is required.

Administration/Visitor Services: Assist the staff with mailings, phones, memberships, filing, store sales and assisting visitors. Can be on a regular schedule or as needed.

Apple Pies: Make apple pies to sell in the gift shop. Meets mornings as needed, mainly in the fall.
